Artist Photo 2: Michael Magill

Michael Magill won the Artists of Carnegie Hall Award in 1997. He not only takes pictures of trees in the winter, he also has many photos of the city, but never the busy city. In many of his photographs there is one single person and their shadow standing next to a big lighted building. Some of his photos are just of buildings themselves with no people. It is always nighttime in the photographs of the buildings and there are bright lights coming from them, which makes very high contrast with the night sky. The majority of his photos taken in North America were taken in downtown New York City, however he does have a collection of photos taken in Europe. This is the second photo I took to demonstrate the style of Magill. I wanted to take a picture of a lighted building at nighttime, but since there are not too many big bulidings near by, this is a photo of a gas station. However, it is still a building and the bright lights have great value contrast with the dark sky. The lights and the building in the back really draw your eye throughout the whole photo. I think it is a great example of Magill's style of photography because it captures all of the values that his photographs capture of a similar setting.
